How long can fish protein water-soluble fertilizer be stored?

The shelf life of water-soluble fish protein fertilizer typically ranges from 12 to 24 months, depending on the product formulation, storage conditions, and packaging method. Unopened original packaging stored in a cool, dry place can last for two years; once opened, it is recommended to use the product within one year.

Product Form: Liquid fish protein fertilizers often contain preservatives and have a longer shelf life (approximately 24 months). Powdered forms, due to their low moisture content, are resistant to spoilage and have a similar shelf life. Paste-like products are prone to absorbing moisture and clumping; using them within 18 months is recommended.

Packaging Seal: Nitrogen-filled aluminum foil bags offer better oxidation resistance than standard plastic bottles, and vacuum packaging can further extend shelf life. If the package cannot be resealed after opening, the nutritional components will gradually degrade.

Storage Environment: Store at temperatures between 5°C and 28°C, away from direct sunlight. High temperatures accelerate protein decomposition, leading to foul odors, while humidity exceeding 70% can cause clumping and mold growth.

Identifying and Handling Spoiled Product
Normal fish protein fertilizer ranges in color from pale yellow to brownish-tan and has a characteristic marine, fishy odor. Signs of spoilage include:
Liquid separation or the formation of white, flocculent sediment
Powder clumping into hard masses that are difficult to crush
A pungent, sour, or moldy odor
Spoiled fertilizer may produce harmful substances; it should not be used and should be disposed of as general waste.

Best Practices for Storage
Repackage immediately after opening: Transfer to dark glass bottles or fill the original container completely to minimize air exposure; add a silica gel desiccant near the opening.
Record the opening date: Mark the date on the package and prioritize using products opened earlier.
Prevent cross-contamination: Use clean, dry tools for dispensing; strictly avoid mixing with other chemical fertilizers or organic matter.

In practice, some farmers in regions with high summer temperatures report a reduced shelf life of 10–14 months; it is advisable to adjust purchasing quantities based on the local climate. The latest standard from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (NY/T 3578-2020) stipulates that the stated shelf life for fish protein fertilizers must not exceed two years; consumers should check the production date when purchasing.
